Icing on the wedding cakes
Saturday June 26th was a day of celebration for Lyndsey and Alex Keay as they got married at Lunga House, near Oban. Their wedding was particularly special for Mary’s Meals as they chose to ditch the usual tradition of receiving wedding presents, and opted to encourage people to donate to Mary’s Meals as their way of congratulating the happy couple.
Alex has been following SIR’s work since its formation in 1992, and volunteered in Liberia for nine months. After deciding that their house was full enough, they chose to encourage people to donate to Mary’s Meals, and the couple had enormous support from their friends and family as they went on to raise over £1500. The couple are still taking donations on their website at www.justgiving.com/lyndseyandalex.
Alex said: “It was an easy decision to make as we both think Mary’s Meals is a wonderful charity and have seen first hand how well the money is spent and what a huge difference their work makes.”
Another couple to swap presents for donations were Monica and Brian McEwan. They got married on May 29th in Eaglesham, Lanarkshire and also held a football match in aid of both Mary’s Meals and Show Racism The Red Card on May 2nd.
Monica works in one of the Mary’s Meals charity shops and the couple agreed from the very start that they would do what they could for Mary’s Meals. The wedding donations were a huge success, and they managed to raise over £6000, and due to people not wanting to be impolite, they still received a large amount of gifts.
Monica said: “If we had only raised £9 it would have been a success in our eyes as we would have fed one child for a full school year. As it happens our friends and family donated £6,147 and I know Mary’s Meals will put this money to great use.”
Brian organised a charity football match in Springburn in May as part of his stag do, and the game raised an extra £300. Brian is hoping to make the match an annual event.
Congratulations from Mary’s Meals to the happy couples, and well done with their excellent fundraising efforts.
