Bosnia-Herzegovina is in South-eastern Europe, bordering the Adriatic Sea and Croatia. The country declared independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1992. This led to a devastating civil conflict.  A peace agreement means the country is currently under international administration.  The war displaced around 2 million people and left the country’s infrastructure and economy in ruins.

The charity grew out of a simple response to the suffering caused by the conflict in 1992.  Since 2005 Mary’s Meals has been providing help to the residents of an institution for the handicapped in Sarajevo.

Food for the Vulnerable
Mary’s Meals provides daily meals for the children and adults living in a badly under-resourced institution for the mentally handicapped.  The war years caused terrible hardship.

Apart from the dangers they faced from the fighting, the staff and residents struggled to survive despite chronic food shortages and a lack of heating and medical supplies.

Today Bosnia-Herzegovina is stable but the state has many calls on its funding.  The special needs of the residents at Pazaric would not be met without outside help.
