One aspect of Mary’s Meals that constantly captures the public’s attention is the fact that it only costs £6.15 to provide a child in Malawi with Mary’s Meals for a year.

It is important to bear in mind that this figure relates to Mary’s Meals projects in Malawi.
The average cost of Mary's Meals across all our projects around the world is £8.40*

The reasons the figure is so low
in Malawi are:

1. The staple food is white maize. Mary’s Meals consists of Likuni Phala – a fortified white maize porridge. In other words the Mary’s Meals food is locally produced and readily available. (see Nutrition report for more information)

2. As the Mary’s Meals programme expands in Malawi we are purchasing huge quantities of Likuni Phala each month and it has proved cheaper to buy ‘in bulk’.

3. Local volunteers – their tremendous contribution to the programme keeps running costs in Malawi to a minimum.
