There are many ways your church or parish can get involved in Mary’s Meals. Here are just a few ways.
Rags to Riches
Rags to Riches is a parish collection scheme that has been running for
5 years thanks to the incredible dedication of several teams of volunteers.
Participating parishes invite their parishioners to bring in unwanted clothing and textiles to church services on a pre-arranged day when our vans are on hand to uplift. The sale of these goods to recycling firms raise valuable funds for the work of Mary’s Meals:
Parish Raffle
The same volunteers also organise an annual raffle alongside these collections. The teams start selling tickets around Easter and it continues throughout the year with the draw taking place at the annual Volunteer’s Day in the autumn. The funds raised from this have increased each year.
In 2009 they set a new record by raising over £150,000! As well as this very welcome boost to our funds the volunteers’ presence in parishes throughout Scotland raises awareness about the work of the charity and often leads to other opportunities such as talks to parish groups/schools/clubs.
Speak About Mary’s Meals
You could invite someone from Mary’s Meals
to come along and talk about the work to a church group eg Third World Group, Justice & Peace. This can often lead to other kinds of involvement and fundraising.
Sponsor A School
Many churches/parishes are taking part in the Sponsor A School scheme. This is when a group raises £7,000 to build a school kitchen in Malawi to enable the pupils to receive Mary’s Meals. More information >
