South Wales volunteer Nina Prichard gave a talk this week to the ladies of Nantyglo Wesley Chapel Bright Hour. Some 30 ladies listened to Nina explain all about the work of Marys Meals. The ladies remained very positive about the charity and immediately presented Nina with a cheque for £250. A lovely bright afternoon for all. Thanks to the ladies of Nantyglo and to Nina.

For several years now Dorino Cavalli who lives in Barry, South Wales has been collecting items for the Backpack Project and every few months he contacts Geoff Edge and asks him to call and collect his latest batch.
Often Dorino, will collect items which are ideal to be sold on eBay such as consumer goods from the 1970’s or new household goods and the money from selling these is then donated to Mary’s Meals.
On his latest visit Dorino pointed out some items he thought might be worth selling and then proceeded to fill Geoff’s car with lots of boxes and bags. Once back at home the bags and boxes were sorted and at the bottom of one box a metal whistle was found. The whistle was like a policeman’s whistle but had an engraved crown on it together with the letters AM and a long reference number. After some research it was discovered that the whistle was an RAF ” ditching whistle ” from World War II and was used by RAF aircrew to attract attention if they had to abandon their planes and ” ditch” into the sea.
The whistle was highly coveted on ebay with bids from people in Canada, France, Belgium, Germany and Gibraltar and was eventually sold last week to a buyer from the UK for £31, which is enough to feed 5 children one meal every day in Malawi for an ENTIRE YEAR! Bravo Dorino!

Earlier in the year Anne and Geoff Edge gave a series of talks to pupils and staff of St Illtyd’s RC High School in Cardiff. They talked about Marys Meals and also about the backpack appeal. They left a lasting impression on the school and as a result the school has raised and donated £1000 to Marys Meals and also collected 212 backpacks! Well done St Illtyd’s! -

It was Morag Insley who, in conversation with Geoff Edge at the Mary’s Meals conference, suggested that Mary’s Meals should have a stand at the Soroptimist Annual Conference in Cardiff last September. Morag had been the founding Vice President of the Club in Newport some 43 years ago but had now returned to her native Scotland.
Working through the Newport Club an invitation to have a stand at the conference was arranged and this has led to a number of invitations to speak at clubs throughout Wales.
It was therefore excellent that the Newport Club members were able to hear about the work of Mary’s Meals at a talk given by Geoff Edge at the Hilton Hotel in Newport.Photo -Members of the Newport Soroptimist Club after a talk at the Hilton Hotel, Newport
