Millions are at risk in South Sudan and Kenya. Help us reach desperately hungry children today.

East Africa’s children are in crisis. Drought and conflict have created a humanitarian emergency spanning several countries, including two where we serve Mary’s Meals – South Sudan and Kenya.

Across South Sudan, a brutal war is raging. Families are being forced to flee their homes, schools are being destroyed, and famine has been declared in parts of the country. In Turkana, northern Kenya – an arid desert land where rivers run dry and crops and livestock struggle to survive – life is a constant fight for survival.

Key facts:

  • More than 20 million people across East Africa are on the brink of starvation and the United Nations has said the world is facing its gravest humanitarian crisis since 1945.
  • In South Sudan, 7.5 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, close to two million are internally displaced.
  • More than half of the country’s children are out of school in South Sudan – the highest proportion of any conflict zone in the world.
  • In Turkana, a third consecutive year of scarce rainfall is causing thirst and hunger, decimating livestock, destroying livelihoods and spreading disease.
  • Acute rates of malnutrition in Turkana are more than double the emergency threshold. With the next rainy season predicted to fail, the situation is likely to deteriorate.
  • Mary’s Meals has been present in South Sudan since 2008 and Kenya since 2005, working to attract impoverished children to the classroom through a daily meal in school.

During this time of crisis, the daily meal Mary’s Meals provides is not just a powerful incentive to come to school – but a vital lifeline for vulnerable children in desperate need of nourishment.
