Children eating Mary's Meals in Malawi

Fundraising tips

Are you gearing up to start fundraising for your chosen school and looking for some inspiration? Here is a snapshot of some of the creative ways people are raising vital funds for our work.

From coffee mornings, sponsored sports events, and raffles, to read-a-thons, talent shows or film nights – there are so many fun and exciting ways for you to raise funds for your chosen school. Whether you are fundraising as part of a group or taking on this challenge on your own, your little acts of love – and the meals they are helping to provide – are giving hope to the children who attend your chosen school and making a real and lasting difference.

Some ways to raise money include organising a cake and coffee morning at your home, local community centre, church, or school and enlisting the help of family or friends to bake and sell homemade cakes and other treats. Or maybe you would prefer an active challenge? If you’re looking to put your fitness to the test, you could set yourself a running, walking, swimming or cycling challenge and ask your friends, family, and colleagues to sponsor you.

If your neighbours, colleagues, or loved ones aren’t familiar with our work, you could organise a screening of one of our films along with a short quiz during a lunch break or weekend. You could even ask fellow employees to donate their last hour’s pay on a Friday afternoon to raise money. Educating those around you about the work of Mary’s Meals and the ever-growing need for school feeding programmes will stand you in good stead as you encourage them to support your fundraising journey.

Are you or any of your friends a teacher? Or do you have children attending a local school? Why not invite teachers and parents to take on a challenge with the pupils? Or perhaps you could encourage your own children to do odd jobs for neighbours and people in your local area to support your fundraising efforts?

Here are some examples of Mary’s Meals supporters and how they are raising funds:

  • Gospel singers on the Spanish island of Mallorca organised a night of gospel music and raised more than €1,700!
  • In Canada, the annual Basketball Bonanza for Mary’s Meals event is a highly anticipated event. To raise funds for our work, the Calgary Police department goes head to head with the Calgary Fire department to see which team can score the most amount of hoops.
  • In Portugal, teacher and athlete Nuno Gaspar ran two ultramarathons to raise funds for all 5,000 of the children who receive Mary’s Meals in Mozambique.
  • In America, Dale Heider and Dave Lensing raised $8,400 by hiking 26 miles around America’s Grand Canyon.
