Miles for (many) meals: How supporters in Germany help provide school meals

Holger Hedelt raises more than €3,000 for Mary’s Meals by running 1,100 kilometres across France and Spain

Published on

In April, Mary’s Meals supporter Holger Hedelt set off on an extraordinary challenge – running 1,100 kilometres across France and Spain to raise funds for Mary’s Meals. His goal was to raise €1 for every kilometre he ran.

The race, named TRANSESPAÑA, is split into 18 stages, starting in Urdos in France and finishing in Malaga in southern Spain. Holger made the decision to end his race in early May, and testament to his incredible efforts, he far surpassed his fundraising target, raising more than €3,000 for Mary’s Meals.

How does fundraising in Germany help children?

Fundraising in Germany helps Mary’s Meals reach children living in communities where poverty and other challenges can make it difficult for them to access education. A daily school meal provides an incentive for children to attend school and helps them to learn and build a better future.

Where does Mary’s Meals provide school meals?

Mary’s Meals provides school meals in 16 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, reaching more than 3 million children in thousands of places of learning. The programmes are run in communities where the need is greatest.

What impact does a school meal have?

A daily school meal can help encourage children to attend school and concentrate on their lessons rather than worrying about their next meal. By providing food in a place of learning, Mary’s Meals helps remove one barrier to education for children living in areas of great need.

How can I support Mary’s Meals?
